Who we are
The Box Murals Project (formerly Bell Box Murals Project) is a grassroots public art initiative that began in Toronto in 2009. Founded and directed by Michael Cavanaugh through Community Matters Toronto, the project empowered local artists and communities to reimagine Bell utility boxes as vibrant canvases. Under Michael's leadership, over 600 murals were completed in 50+ communities.
In 2025, the project transitions into a new chapter under the leadership of Andrea Rodriguez, a Toronto-based muralist, designer, and educator. Andrea brings more than a decade of experience in art direction, public art, design, lettering, and community engagement. The name has changed to reflect the true spirit of collaboration, place-making, and creativity that the project represents.
Together, we continue to create murals that reflect local identity, foster pride, and transform the streetscape.

In Memory of Michael Cavanaugh
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Michael Cavanaugh, a champion of public art and community engagement.
Michael was instrumental in building the Bell Box Murals Project into the vibrant initiative it became, supporting hundreds of artists and bringing colour and connection to neighbourhoods across Ontario. His vision, dedication, and belief in the power of public art will continue to guide and inspire us. We are committed to carrying his legacy forward through every project we create.
Thank you, Michael, for everything you gave to this community. You will always be a part of it.
